RIM CEO’s and Mike Lazaridis are out, Thorsten Heins Steps in - Video
RIM’s strategy of having 2 CEO’s, unsurprisingly, turned out not to be a winning strategy. Words of buy out have been on everyone’s lips for months and finally RIM’s decided to do something about it by kicking out Co-CEO’s Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis. They have replaced the duo with COO Thorsten Heins.
In an interview with The Globe and Mail Heins gives some insight into his strategy by immediately seeking a Chief Marketing Officer to polish up the company’s severely damaged brand, and he “will not rule out licensing RIM’s new BlackBerry 10 operating system to other handset manufacturers.”
There were actually a few interesting tidbits in the interview we hope were just PR gone wild. Heins asserted that he’s “confident” in the existing lineup of BlackBerry handsets and the software update recently made available for the PlayBook. We have to wonder what line up he’s looking at since clearly BlackBerry needs a strong departure from existing practices to succeed.
What are the former RIM head’s going to be doing with all their free time? Lazaridis will become “vice-chair of the board with special duties to examine innovation,” Balsillie is going to become a traditional director. Laxaridis didn’t exit his role quietly but with a very interesting quote that really makes you scratch your head.
“I think it’s that unwillingness to sacrifice our long-term value for short-term gain. That’s why we didn’t choose Android. That’s why we decided to build the future on QNX.”
Imagine a world where BlackBerry moved to Android? We can’t wait to see where things go next with Heins in control, we expect that MWC in a few weeks will offer some more insight into the future of BlackBerry.
If you want to get a sense of what RIM’s new CEO is like, he’s released a video with his views of the company, clearly there are a lot of PR lines in there, Innovation can’t really be at the core of RIM.
