Cryoscope: a haptic device for forecasting weather
Since you do not possess the mutant powers of Storm and cannot influence the weather one bit, you might as well go for the ride, and not get caught by surprise with a weather predicting device. Sure, we have fancy widgets on our smartphones these days that let us know what kind of weather it will be like outside for the day (and the week ahead), but there is nothing quite like remembering it through touch. After all, touch is one of the most efficient methods of knowing whether something is hot or cold, leading Rob Godshaw to work on what he calls the Cryoscope, a device that offers haptic feedback to the daily weather forecast, as you can feel tomorrow’s temperature.
An Industrial Design student at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and Associate Engineer at Syyn Labs, Godshaw encased a thermoelectric Peltier element, heat sink and cooling fan inside an aluminum cube, which in turn is hooked up to an external power supply and an Arduino controller, allowing it to detect tomorrow’s weather forecast, and pumping in heat to depict hot weather, while taking account humidity and wind chill.
