iOS 4.3 : only 3 devices allowed
Getting set to unleash Apple’s new Personal Hotspot function when iOS 4.3 lands next week? Well, we’ve got some bad news. A leaked memo from US network AT&T claims that you’ll only be able to share your Wi-Fi network with three devices at any one time.
Initially, it was thought this was an AT&T issue, but further digging reveals this is very much part of iOS 4.3. That means UK networks will only let you beam out your connection to a trio of gadgets using Wi-Fi.

Apple’s own official iOS 4.3 page says, “You can share your connection with up to five devices at once over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB — with up to three of those connections using Wi-Fi.” A footnote then adds, “Personal Hotspot requires a supporting hotspot tethering plan from your carrier and works with up to three devices over Wi-Fi, three devices over Bluetooth, and one device over USB.
This will be a boon to those who say that Android’s hotspot smarts offer a better deal if you want to share your data. And will doubtless again open up the debate of Apple controlling what you do with their kit.
